The routine use of Sephadex to estimate "free" bilirubin and the residual serum bilirubin binding capacity.

چکیده
Those of your readers who are interested in anticonvulsant-drug analyses will be familiar with the drugs ethotoin (Peganone#{174}, 3-ethyl-5-phenylhydantoin) and mephenytoin (Mesantoin#{174}, 5-ethyl-3methyl-5-phenylhydantoin). They will also be familiar with the name Nirvanol#{174}. Unfortunately, a dreadful state of confusion exists among various authorities as to whether Nirvanol is ethotoin or the N-demethylated metabolite of mephenytoin: 5-ethyl-5-phenylhydantoin. I suggest the easiest solution is to completelydrop the term Nirvanol from our vocabulary.

Estimation of bilirubin binding capacity of neonatal serum.
One aim of laboratory investigation in neonatal jaundice is to prevent kernicterus from occurring. Estimation of the bilirubin-binding capacity of serum is an important measurement along with total bilirubin determination. With a convenient Sephadex competitive binding procedure, KERNLUTE provides information on whether or not the neonate's bilirubin-binding capacity has been exceeded. Further ...
متن کاملFaster estimation of reserve bilirubin binding capacity of serum from the neonate by thin-layer chromatography on sephadex.
Knowledge of the reserve bilirubin-binding capacity is useful in management of hyperbilirubinemia in the newborn. We describe thin-layer gel chromatography that permits measurement of this variable, with a 250-mul sample of serum, within 50 min. Single samples from four different infants can be analyzed on the same plate. The capacity of 40 sera from jaundiced and of 19 sera from nonjaundiced i...
متن کاملBilirubin-protein interactions monitored by difference spectroscopy.
Difference spectroscopy is used to monitor bilirubin-protein interactions, to assess the residual binding capacity of proteins for bilirubin. A change in the difference spectra monitored at 482 nm is directly proportional to bound bilirubin up to a molar ratio of bilirubin to albumin of approximately 1; increasing bilirubin beyond the 1:1 molar ratio does not further change the difference spect...
متن کاملBilirubin binding by primary sites of human serum albumin, with suppression of secondary-site interference by use of a high salt concentration.
A high (2.0 mol/L) NaCl concentration apparently suppresses the secondary-site binding of bilirubin by human serum albumin. Thus if an excess of bilirubin is added to human serum albumin or to neonatal serum in buffer containing 0.1 mol of tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane and 2.0 mol of NaCl per liter (pH 7.5), and the bilirubin not bound to albumin is removed by treatment with calcium carbonate...
متن کاملThe influence of clinical status on total bilirubin binding capacity in newborn infants.
The relationship between total bilirubin binding capacity (TBBC) and clinical status was investigated in order to assess the risk of bilirubin toxicity in 83 infants with jaundice in this study. Infants with respiratory distress, acidosis, hypoglycaemia, sepsis, asphyxia-anoxia and hypercarbia were accepted as ill and the remainders were well. Sephadex G-25 gel filtration method was used to det...
